Avon's New Packaging Initiative Calls for a Global Color Solution

When the Avon global design team wanted to re-energize its flagship line of AvonColor lip gloss, moisturizing lip colors, mascara and foundation products, they wanted their packaging to convey a look and feeling of luxury and sophistication. Deep, rich, satiny colors with flashes of metallic sparkle were selected for different products and global markets. While these colors would create a harmonious, upscale visual statement consistent throughout all the AvonColor products around the world, they would also pose a considerable challenge.

Further complicating the project, Avon planned to use a half-dozen different plastic resins - chosen for specific properties and compatibility with the unique chemistry of the various cosmetics. Each material responds differently to color and may have slightly different processing characteristics depending on where in the world they are sourced.

Fortunately, through it all, Avon could rely on the color and effects experts at Clariant ColorWorks to help ensure color consistency, regardless of which plastic material was involved, which molder was producing the packaging, and where it was being made. Avon achieved their objectives, launching all the products in new packaging simultaneously around the world and realizing a satisfying surge in sales.
